Along this route, you can explore the Iberá Wetlands, one of the largest wetlands in the world. Located in the north-centre of Corrientes province, the estuaries are protected by the Iberá National Park and the Iberá Provincial Park, which together make up the great Iberá Park. You can visit the Wetlands through the “portals” located in their surroundings.
Access portals. A series of towns and villages serve as the base and gateway or portal to the estuaries, providing accommodation and services with different category levels. Each portal offers a unique proposal of activities, experiences and tours, often on excursions in the company of local guides.
The portals can be a destination per se, or part of an itinerary connecting more than one portal to discover the different sides of this great wetland.
Cities. Corrientes capital city, Ituzaingó, Mercedes (in the province of Corrientes) and Posadas (capital of the province of Misiones), are the main cities to access the portals and tour around the region.
The provincial capitals of Corrientes, Resistencia (Chaco) and Posadas (Misiones) have air and land connection services and are good starting points for you to visit the region.
The most comfortable way to get to the access portals of the wetlands is by vehicle or hiring tours from nearby cities.
Many roads are not paved and can become impassable under the rain. Some sections can only be toured in 4WD vehicles.
Almost all the portals to Iberá offer multiple accommodation options, including some of the best camping sites in Argentina, inns, lodges and country estates.
Some portals provide luxury options and very comfortable lodges. In others, such as Uguay and Río Corriente, the offer is more limited.
If you decide to stay in the main cities, you will find a great deal of lodging options.
Open to visitors all year round. If you are not fond of the hot weather, avoid going from December to March.
Given the health situation, it is advisable to check the access requirements before visiting the province. Some attractions may require booking in advance.
The Iberá Wetlands are a rural destination. It is advisable that you carry printed maps or download them on your cell phone since the Wi-Fi signal does not always work, so make sure you have a full car tank and always check the condition of the roads and the weather forecast.
It is likely that you will see animals along the way. Drive slowly, enjoy the scenery and avoid accidents that may endanger the fauna.
Remember that it can be very hot: always carry plenty of water and drink frequently.
Recommended clothing: light clothing, long light pants and long-sleeved shirts, as well as closed shoes to walk comfortably and avoid insect bites.
Always carry some cash. In the portals, there are no ATMs or the possibility of making electronic payments.
