Moconá Provincial Park

Boasting 3 km of longitudinal waterfalls amidst the rainforest, the Moconá Falls are a unique phenomenon in the world. Due to a geological fault on the Uruguay River, the water literally crashes down sideways into the lower half of the fault line, as if the river was split in the middle. There are boat rides that reach the base of the falls. The park also has trails and paths to walk along surrounded by large ferns, guadua trees and old trees. There is a service area and a restaurant.

Useful information

- If you are planning to travel by plane, the city of Posadas has an airport.

- You can enjoy this route throughout the year. Summer is usually very hot, with frequent and abundant rain. Always have a waterproof jacket at hand. Even though the climate is subtropical, autumn and winter may be quite cold, so it is a good idea to include heavy clothing in your luggage.

- Throughout the circuit there are different kinds of accommodation, from campsites to hostels, cabins, different categories of hotels and jungle lodges. Posadas, Aristóbulo del Valle and El Soberbio are the largest cities and the ones that have the widest offer.

- Remember to camp only in areas where camping is allowed. Put your trash in bags and take them with you. Only start campfires in areas where this is allowed, and put them out with plenty of water.

- The essentials on a trip through the jungle are: bottle of water, sunscreen, hat and repellent.

- If the river is high, the Moconá Falls are not visible. Even though the park has hiking trails, it may remain closed due to the level of the Yabotí Guazú Stream. Before going, check whether the park is open and the boat ride allowed.
